Technology allows teams to communicate expeditiously and effectively in spite of challenges like physical location. Video conferencing has more recently become a popular tool. Since COVID-19, we have seen a rapid growth in its use. Like all communication tools, there are pros and cons to video conferencing. It is an excellent tool for remote professionals to maintain a semblance of normalcy and to be included in important discussions. In-person interactions, when possible, is optimal, as this allows for individuals to have greater exposure to important nonverbal cues. 

Finally, instant messaging can also be an effective way to communicate. Successful instant messaging, however, isn’t a given. There are some tenets to consider before firing off any thoughts. The ‘why’ and ‘how’ one expresses a thought is just as, if not more important than what the person is actually trying to convey. While in many ways instant messaging is a resourceful tool when a person needs quick answers to simple questions, it can often be misinterpreted if trust and familiarity between the two parties isn’t strong. Because of this, instant messaging isn’t an optimal communication tool to resolve conflict.

Helpful Skills for Conflict Resolution

Learning how to develop basic, important communication skills can often prevent and/or resolve conflict. Several communication cues and skills consciously employed in day to day work life, such as tone of voice and body language, written communication and the use of technology can significantly mitigate risk for conflict and improve a team’s ability to navigate conflict when it arises. 

Nonverbal body language can convey a great deal of information. For instance, if someone is pacing or twitching they may be anxious. Picking up on nonverbal cues like these can help to navigate stressful situations by inducing more empathy, compassion and patience, all of which play pivotal roles in conflict resolution.

Overall, effective communication plays a fundamental role in resolving conflicts in the workplace. By fostering clear and concise communication, team members can build trust and promote collaboration. Thus, leading to a better understanding of one another’s perspectives. Nevertheless, even seasoned communicators can inadvertently create conflict or struggle to resolve it. There is always a time and place for professional help when an intervention is  needed.
